Learning and Development Specialist

About KIND:

Kids in Need of Defense (KIND) is a global leader in the protection of unaccompanied refugee and migrant children. Launched in 2008, KIND champions a world in which every child’s rights and well-being are protected throughout their journey to safety. KIND has provided over 19,000 children with high quality representation in their immigration proceedings by training more than 41,000 attorneys and cultivating partnerships with over 600 law firms, corporate legal departments, law schools, and bar associations across the country.

KIND’s social services program ensures that migrant and refugee children – who have often endured trauma – receive counseling, educational support, medical care and other comprehensive services.

To address the root causes of child migration from Central America and strengthen protection of unaccompanied children, KIND advocates for policy changes and educates lawmakers, the media, and the broader public on the conditions that drive these children to flee their home countries. KIND supports children returning to their home countries by connecting them to essential support services and sponsors gender-based violence prevention programs in Central America to protect children in countries of origin and transit.

KIND is also building upon its expertise in the protection of unaccompanied children to encourage the development of pro bono initiatives across Europe in partnership with European NGOs.

Position Summary:

KIND seeks a Learning and Development Specialist to support the HR talent team through the performance of a variety of logistical and administrative HR work in the areas of training, onboarding, talent management, learning and development and DEI initiatives.

Working closely with the Director, Talent and Culture and the Learning and Development Coordinator, the Talent and Development Specialist will lead in driving and supporting the talent agenda for KIND in efforts to, develop, train, engage and keep the best employees. Will also support the Talent Strategy implementation that is being define by the Director, Talent and Culture, design and implement programs for talent development, employee assessments, and succession planning. They will help identify training needs and create strategic solutions for improving skills across KIND.

The Learning and Development Specialist helps to enhance and advance KIND’s workplace culture through the implementation of DEI initiatives related to the coordination of DEI meetings and attracting, hiring and maintaining a diverse workforce.

The successful candidate is a highly motivated team player, critical thinker, with excellent writing and communications skills, willing learner, multi-tasker able to time manage effectively with our team.

This position is 100% remote from any location in Mexico or Central America.

Essential Functions:

Talent & Development

  • Implement a robust onboarding process which incorporates education about KIND, creates connections to colleagues and cross functional collaboration, and sets the tone for a highly professional and productive workplace.
  • Support efforts to implement the online performance management system, guiding all managers through the PM process and providing recommendations for turning feedback into concrete growth steps.
  • Collaborate with the Director, Talent and Culture and other leaders to develop a management training program.
  • Work to identify individual learning initiatives that facilitate employee development and ensure that leadership development happens at an appropriate level that meets the current and future needs of the organization.
  • Assist in the creation of internal career paths; help to identify high potential individuals, determine work abilities, and professional support needed to engage and retain new talent.

Culture and Engagement

  • Conduct regular employee check-ins to develop an understanding of the employee experience and have a pulse on the organization.
  • Support initiatives and opportunities to promote healthy cross-departmental internal communication, teamwork and collaboration.
  • Partner with Director, Talent and Culture to support and implement KIND’s diversity, equity and inclusion, and wellness efforts.
  • Support the implementation of employee engagement strategies – talent systems, mentoring programs, career growth plans and more.
  • Develop and execute proactive and strategic communication initiatives in partnership with the HR functions developing and maintaining a comprehensive annual communication plan to support HR initiatives and programs
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Undergraduate degree in human resources management or equivalent; Graduate degree or HR certification preferred.
  • A minimum of five years of experience in human resources, organizational development, and talent development.
  • Self-motivated and results-driven with the ability to communicate and influence effectively with peer groups, hiring managers clients, and candidates.
  • Experience in a complex organization or consulting role requiring impeccable judgment, strong analytical skills and exceptional client management capabilities and a demonstrated understanding of professional development methodologies and tools.
  • Demonstrated ability to inspire and positive results from staff and colleagues through influence, empathy, and accountability.
  • Familiarity with HR databases, BambooHR, ADP and/or similar systems.
  • Customer-centric mindset with strong organizational skills;
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple project priorities in a highly dynamic environment and the ability work with flexibility, efficiency, and diplomacy both individually and as part of a collaborative team effort.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills, in positions requiring communication with a broad and diverse audience.
  • Ability to travel as needed.
  • Strong ability to work within a remote work environment and with a dispersed workforce.
