Background: 

Kids in Need of Defense (KIND) is an innovative partnership among interested philanthropists, law firms and corporate supporters. As the leading national organization that works to ensure that no refugee or immigrant child faces immigration court alone, KIND is dedicated to providing pro bono representation and promoting positive systemic change in both law and policy to improve protections for unaccompanied immigrant and refugee children. KIND also engages in programming in Central America and Mexico to promote the best interests and protection of migrant children throughout the region. Launched in fall 2008, KIND is headquartered in Washington, DC and has 10 field offices across the United States.

About the position: KIND's New York field office is seeking a summer undergraduate/graduate level student to support our in-house MSW social services coordinator develop community engagement projects, design and implement innovative outreach techniques, and track relevant data. Community projects include, but are not limited to, organizing resource fairs, presentations related to social services and benefits for unaccompanied minors, and applicable educational trainings. Student will be closely involved in the process of developing new ideas and strategies meant to promote long-term sustainable relationships with social service providers in New York.

Qualifications: 

Interested applicants must be:

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited college or university
  • Fluent in Spanish & English
  • Strong communication skills
  • Experience working with immigrant families and children preferred
  • Experience working with children and survivors of trauma preferred
  • Passionate about issues affecting unaccompanied immigrant children
  • Ability to commit to twelve weeks of interning preferred; minimum commitment of ten weeks, 12-15 hours per week required

Responsibilities:  Social Services interns will assist us in the following: 

  • Maintaining KINDís database of social services resources for unaccompanied children: Outreach to agencies to inquire about services and referral processes; build partnerships with community social service providers.
  • Keep databases updated with information and create resource lists for communities in the New York City and Long Island area 
  • Event Coordination: Outreach and coordination of community events focused on connecting KIND clients to social services resources.
  • Client Support: Working directly with KIND clients to provide social services referrals.
  • Assist in helping to develop and carry out organizational and office-wide events.  
  • Actively engage in the process of organizing, developing, coordinating, and executing community programming.  
  • Track relevant data.
