Kids in Need of Defense (KIND) is an innovative partnership among interested philanthropists, law firms and corporate supporters. As the leading national organization that works to ensure that no refugee or immigrant child faces immigration court alone, KIND is dedicated to providing pro bono representation as well as positive systemic change in both law and policy to improve the protection of unaccompanied immigrant and refugee children. KIND also engages in programming in Central America and Mexico to promote the best interests and protection of migrant children throughout the region. Launched in fall 2008, KIND is headquartered in Washington, DC and has 10 field offices across the United States.

POSITION PURPOSE

 

Responsible for managing and overseeing the provision of pro bono legal representation and direct representation of unaccompanied children through KINDís network of major law firms, corporate partners and law school partners in addition to in-house attorneys at KINDís field office in the Boston

 

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  • Supervise KINDís Legal and Program staff in Boston with support from KINDís Deputy Directors of Legal Services
  • Serve as the field office primary liaison in the Boston with KINDís headquarters
  • Develop and implement management strategies to meet ambitious programmatic and funding requirements, including staff recruitment and development, employee engagement and quality control of KINDís Legal Services delivery in Boston
  • Develop and implement effective strategies to increase pro bono representation of unaccompanied immigrant children with support from Senior Director of Pro Bono Partnerships
  • Manage and participate in the process of matching child clients with pro bono and in-house direct representation attorneys
  • Recruit, train, and provide hands-on mentorship of volunteer attorneys representing unaccompanied children in immigration matters
  • Monitor and present on changes in immigration law to multiple platforms including legal service partners and pro bono partners
  • Promote volunteer support by actively working to develop, manage, and maintain KINDís relationships with law firms and corporate counsel located in Boston
  • Oversee the provision of direct representation services to clients
  • Collaborate on social services programming for clients and pro bono attorneys in conjunction with Director of Social Services, Deputy Director of Social Services, and field office Social Services Coordinator
  • Participate in local coalitions comprised of stakeholdersí support of unaccompanied immigrant childrenís issues
  • Coordinate day-to-day office management and administration including oversight of the performance evaluation process
  • Ensure data integrity and utilize organization database to assist in creating more efficient processes and identifying training, recruitment, and client needs/opportunities, with help from KINDís Senior Director of Data Strategy
  • Work with Deputy Director of Program Development and Performance Quality to ensure compliance with all grant and funding requirements
  • Work with Policy and Communications team as needed
  • Assist with special projects of local and national scope at the direction of KINDís headquarters leadership providing technical assistance and other expert support to Legal Services and other departments at KIND
    • Other duties as assigned

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

 

  • JD Degree
  • Licensed attorney admitted to practice in Massachusetts
  • Minimum 5-7 yearsí experience working in immigration law, including representation of clients in humanitarian immigration claims such as asylum, Special Immigrant Juvenile Status, U visas and T visas.
  • Minimum 3-5 yearsí experience supervising and managing legal staff
  • Minimum 1 year experience working with pro bono attorneys demonstrating an understanding of private law firm and corporate pro bono culture
  • Experience working as middle management reporting into a national or larger management structure
  • Experience working with children, preferably immigrant and refugee children, or experience working with survivors of abuse, human trafficking, or other trauma
  • A strong record of cultural competence and cross-cultural communication skills
  • A deep understanding of and ability to effectively participate in local coalition work
  • Excellent writing and public speaking/training skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively and to handle multiple demands in a busy work environment
  • Spanish speaking preferred but not required
    • Ability to travel as assigned

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

 

  • Ability to work within an office environment, have regular interaction via telephone, skype and email with KINDís national team and have regular interaction including meetings and events with pro bono partners and the community
