ABOUT KIND 

Kids in Need of Defense (KIND) is an innovative partnership among the Microsoft Corporation, Angelina Jolie and other interested philanthropists, law firms and corporate supporters. As the leading national organization that works to ensure that no refugee or immigrant child faces immigration court alone, KIND is dedicated to providing pro bono representation as well as positive systemic change in both law and policy to improve the protection of unaccompanied immigrant and refugee children. KIND also engages in programming in Central America and Mexico to promote the best interests and protection of migrant children throughout the region.  Launched in fall 2008, KIND is headquartered in Washington, DC and has ten field offices across the United States.

 

POSITION DESCRIPTION 

KIND seeks a full-time Pro Bono Coordinating Attorney in San Francisco, CA to help develop, maintain, and oversee the provision of pro bono legal representation to unaccompanied children through KIND’s network of major law firms and corporate partners, as well as direct representation. Pro bono mentorship will include cases for children living in the geographic area KIND covers in the Central Valley, and for children in long-term foster care of the Office of Refugee Resettlement in the Sacramento region. This position includes helping children, including those in long-term foster care, understand the immigration process, and training volunteer attorneys to represent individual child clients effectively before immigration authorities to obtain relief, such as Special Immigrant Juvenile Status, asylum, T and/or U visas, and representation before California state courts. This attorney will also provide direct representation to unaccompanied immigrant children in long-term foster care in the Sacramento area.. This representation may be undertaken as co-counsel with pro bono attorneys.

 

EDUCATIONAL & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS 

JD with two to four years of experience working in immigration law, which should include representation of clients in humanitarian immigration claims such as Special Immigrant Juvenile Status, asylum, U visas and T visas; state court experience in probate, custody, dependency, and/or delinquency is preferred.

 

REQUIRED SKILLS

  • Admission to practice law in the state of California;
  • Fluency in Spanish;
  • Experience working with children, preferably immigrant and refugee children, or experience working with survivors of abuse, human trafficking, or other trauma;
  • Experience in direct representation of clients in immigration proceedings, including children or adults in ORR custody or Immigration detention;
  • A strong record of cultural responsiveness and cross-cultural communication skills;
  • An understanding of the private law firm and corporate pro bono culture and the ability to be a well-respected and effective representative of the program to all stakeholders;
  • Mentoring and training experience;
  • Family law, probate, or juvenile court experience preferred;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills;
  • Excellent professional judgment;
  • Ability to hit the ground working, multi-task, and work independently; and
  • Ability to work collaboratively.

 

 PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES 

Based in KIND’s San Francisco office, the Pro Bono Coordinating Attorney’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide appropriate legal orientation presentations to UAC in long-term foster care and those who have been released to sponsor;
  • Complete intakes for UAC in long-term foster care following presentations;
  • Undertake direct representation as permitted for children in their cases before the immigration court;
  • Recruit, train, and provide mentoring to volunteer attorneys representing unaccompanied children in immigration matters;
  • Develop and maintain updated guidance materials, sample filings, and legal training presentations;
  • Foster and manage KIND relationships with law firms and corporate counsel in coordination with the other legal services team members;
  • Assist with trainings and presentations;
  • File all relevant paperwork and applications with government agencies, immigration court, and state courts, where applicable;
  • Collaborate with KIND management in support of KIND’s mission;
  • Assist in office operations, including case management, data entry and maintenance, and reports;
  • Participate in conferences, meetings, and trainings as needed;
  • Participate in staff meetings and KIND-wide calls; and
  • Serve as an ambassador of KIND with local coalitions, courts, and agencies.

 

SALARY RANGE   

Commensurate with education & experience.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES 

None  

WORKING CONDITIONS 

Work is generally performed within the office environment but may include attendance at court proceedings in Northern California or the Central Valley of California.

TRAVEL

Local travel several times per week may be necessary.
