Summer/Fall/Spring Internship (Full or Part Time, Non-Law Student) - Kids in Need of Defense (KIND) Ė Newark Office



About KIND: Kids in Need of Defense (KIND) is an innovative partnership among the Microsoft Corporation, Angelina Jolie and other interested philanthropists, law firms and corporate supporters. As the leading national organization that works to ensure that no refugee or immigrant child faces immigration court alone, KIND is dedicated to providing pro bono representation as well as positive systemic change in both law and policy to improve the protection of unaccompanied immigrant and refugee children. KIND also engages in programming in Central America and Mexico to promote the best interests and protection of migrant children throughout the region. Launched in fall 2008, KIND is headquartered in Washington, DC and has 10 field offices across the United States.


About the position: KINDís Newark office is seeking interns to assist KINDís Newark office with in-house (direct) and pro bono (volunteer) legal representation of unaccompanied children. Duties may include:


-          Supporting the representation of unaccompanied children: assist in the preparation of cases for unaccompanied children represented in-house by KIND attorneys, including asylum and Special Immigrant Juvenile Status petitions and State Court filings; assist in preparation for hearings and interviews.

-          Legal Screening: Assist with the initial screening of unaccompanied minor children, conduct communication with child clients, adult sponsors, and other agencies.

-          Research: Research country conditions and psycho-social services to support case work and clients.

-          Case Management: Update case summaries, track important court dates and deadlines, process referrals and communicate with clients.

-          Interpretation and Translation: Assist KIND attorneys in interpretation at client meetings as well as USCIS interviews; perform translation assignments for a variety of documents related to client work.

-          Office administration: Assist with various ad-hoc assignments related to managing and organizing an office in a nonprofit setting.



  • Enrolled or graduated from accredited undergraduate program.
  • Strong writing skills and attention to detail.
    • Experience and interest in working with children, immigrant communities and/or victims of trauma preferred.
    • Professional fluency in Spanish required.
    • Must be able to use own laptop during the internship.
      • Ability to commit to twelve weeks of interning preferred; minimum commitment of ten weeks required.

KIND is seeking candidates for both full and part-time internships for the Fall and Spring semesters. For summer, candidates that are able to commit to a full-time internship will be preferred. Non-semester internships will also be considered. For part-time internships, a minimum of 10 hours per week is required, though a commitment of 16-20 hours is preferred.


KINDís Newark office is located in Roseland, New Jersey. The office is accessible via public transportation, though access by car is generally easiest. This internship is unpaid.
