Kids in Need of Defense (KIND) is an innovative partnership among interested philanthropists, law firms and corporate supporters. As the leading national organization that works to ensure that no refugee or immigrant child faces immigration court alone, KIND is dedicated to providing pro bono representation as well as positive systemic change in both law and policy to improve the protection of unaccompanied immigrant and refugee children. KIND also engages in programming in Central America and Mexico to promote the best interests and protection of migrant children throughout the region. Launched in fall 2008, KIND is headquartered in Washington, DC and has 10 field offices across the United States. 



KIND seeks a full-time Paralegal to be based either in San Francisco, CA, or Sacramento, CA to conduct legal screenings of unaccompanied immigrant children long-term foster care of the Office of Refugee Resettlement in the Sacramento region, manage case files, assist with case preparation, and assist with overall administrative duties of the office, including database management. The paralegal will support KIND Pro Bono Coordinating Attorneys who provide pro bono legal representation to unaccompanied children through KINDís network of major law firms and corporate partners.



Based in either KINDís San Francisco office or KINDís satellite Sacramento office, the Paralegalís responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Coordinate with long-term foster care providers, community partners and other KIND staff to receive referrals of children in custody to provide KYRs and intakes
  • Conduct KYR presentations and intakes of unaccompanied immigrant children in long-term foster care and provide follow up assistance as needed
  • Track all detained children in the long-term foster care programs to ensure they receive KYR presentations and intakes
  • Consult with Pro Bono Coordinating Attorney, and the Senior Pro Bono Coordinating Attorney regarding legal eligibility issues
  • Assist with case preparation for direct representation of clients including preparing filings for immigration court, juvenile and family court, and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security; collect supporting documents, write client declarations and cover letters, and provide assistance with pro bono case placement
  • Prepare and manage docket lists for upcoming court dates
  • Assist in office operations, including case management, data entry and maintenance, and reports;
  • Participate in staff meetings and KIND-wide calls; and
  • Serve as an ambassador of KIND with local coalitions, courts, and agencies.
  • Other duties as assigned



  • Bachelorís degree
  • One to three years of experience working with children, preferably immigrant and refugee children, or experience working with survivors of abuse, human trafficking, or other trauma
  • Experience conducting intakes and/or interviewing children
  • Fluency in Spanish required.
  • A strong record of cultural competence and cross-cultural communication skills
  • Experience or familiarity with immigration and/or family law and immigration authorities highly preferred
  • Experience with data management and databases
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Excellent professional judgment;
  • Ability to work collaboratively, and preferably, prior experience working with attorneys, law firms, or other legal service providers
    • Ability to travel as assigned

Work is generally performed within the office environment but may include meetings offsite to conduct legal screenings and work with children on case preparation.


Travel one to two hours from Sacramento will be necessary a few times per month.
